Great Divide Hibernation Ale $11.29/6-pack 12 oz. bottles

Origin: Colorado. Style: Old Ale. Alcohol Content: 8.1%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-. Brewery notes: "We cellar Hibernation until late October, when it reaches the peak of perfection. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time. Hibernation is a lively treat that really beats the winter chill."

Great Divide Hercules Double IPA $7.99/22 ounce bottle

Great Divide Hercules Double IPA - click to enlarge

Origin: Colorado.

Style: American Double.

Alcohol Content: 9.1%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

Brewery notes: "Hoppier, maltier and with more alcohol than a standard IPA, Hercules Double IPA definitely is not for the faint of heart. Hercules Double IPA is, however, an elixir fit for the gods. A brash but creamy wonder, Hercules pours a deep orange-coppery color, forming substantial lace in the glass. Hercules Double IPA delivers a huge amount of piney, floral, and citrusy hop aroma and flavor from start to finish. A hefty backbone of nutty, toffee-like malt character balances Hercules’ aggressive, punchy hop profile. 85 IBU's."

Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout $8.59/22 ounce bottle

Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout - click to enlarge

Origin: Colorado.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout.

Alcohol Content: 9.5%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A.

Brewery notes: "Crack open Yeti Imperial Stout's sophisticated sibling - Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout. Although these beers come from the same clan, they have entirely different personalities. Aging on a blend of French and toasted oak chips infuses a subtle oak and vanilla character into Yeti’s already intense chocolate, roasted coffee malt flavor and hugely assertive hop profile. 75 IBU's"

Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout $12.29/4-pack 12 oz. bottles

Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout - click to enlarge

Origin: Colorado.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout.

Alcohol Content: 9.5%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A.

Brewery notes: "Yeti Imperial Stout is an onslaught of the senses. An almost viscous, inky-black brew, Yeti opens with a massive, roasty, chocolate, coffee malt flavor that eventually gives way to rich toffee and burnt caramel notes. Packed with an enormous quantity of American hops, Yeti’s hop profile reveals a slightly citrusy, piney, and wonderfully dry hoppy finish. 75 IBU's." Also available in the (pictured) 22 ounce bottle for $7.09.

It's brewed with classic Maris Otter malt and Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops, all imported from England. 36 IBU's."

North Coast PranQster Golden Ale - click to enlarge

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

Brewery notes: "Belgian Ales represent the height of the brewers' art. Sophisticated brewing techniques, yeast blends and unique flavoring elements have elevated the beers of Belgium to the status enjoyed by wine in other countries. PranQster follows in this tradition using a mixed culture of antique yeast strains that produce a floral nose, a full fruity flavor and a clean finish. 20 IBU's."

Brewery Ommegang Three Philosophers $13.19/4-pack 12 oz. bottles

Origin: New York. Style: Quadrupel (Quad). Alcohol Content: 9.8%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-. Brewery notes: "Cynics can't believe it, Epicures hail it a sensation, and Pythagoreans just can't add up what makes this luscious blend of rich malty ale and cherry lambic so delightful. It might be the flavor of dark chocolate and cherry cordials; it could be the way it acquires wisdom and grace in the cellar. Maybe it's a conundrum. What's your theory? The essence of wonder is a unique and masterful blend of strong malty ale and authentic Belgian Kriek. Our philosophers deduce that this powerful marriage of cherries, roasted malts, and dark chocolate will only achieve more wisdom and coherence as it broods in the dark recesses of your cellar." The 750 ml. bottle is $7.59.

He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's RIPA $6.99/22 ounce bottle

Origin: California. Style: Rye Beer. Alcohol Content: 10.0%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-. Brewed to commemorate the life of comedian Lenny Bruce, the recipe includes "obscene amounts" of malts (including rye) and hops, creating an incredibly rich and deep flavor. Matt' Beer Blog review: "This beer pours a deep and clear ruby color with a decent sized off-white head. The beer sorta glugged out in a syrupy fashion. The first scents bring on the rye mixed in with pine needles and a touch of orange peel. The malt is a beast on the nose on this beer pushing around anything else you could really get a good scent out of. The flavor profile is more of the same with plenty of rye flavor with an almost bready malt being most dominant. The hop profile does a fairly good job though trying to balance out all of the malt, but this beer leans heavier towards the malt and not the hops. The mouthfeel is quite full bodied with plenty of carbonation to go around, but this beer leaves quite a bitter finish. The drinkability is actually quite good, but the 10% ABV will sneak up on your if you have an entire bomber."

He'Brew Jewbelation Eleven Anniversary Ale $6.99/22 ounce bottle

Origin: California. Style: American Strong Ale. Alcohol Content: 11.0%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-. Buttle's Beer Blog review: "This monster pours very dark brown. I didn't get a full head, but I'll take the blame for that. Eleven is more malt than hops, tasting primarily of roasted chocolate and then of dark fruits and maybe some spice. It's vaguely reminiscent to me of the reverse of a strong Belgian, which I think of as dark fruits first (plums, prunes, figs...) with chocolate cake underneath. But Belgians also lack the moderately bitter hop finish of Jewbelation Eleven. This pulls it back dry. As it warms, the hops become more prominent. Maybe some alcohol warmth comes through then as well. Jewb11 is full-bodied and low fizzed (as I like it), and is hard to do anything but share and/or sip."

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA $12.29/4-pack 12 oz. bottles

Origin: Pennsylvania. Style: American Double. Alcohol Content: 9.0%.
Beer Advocate Rating: A-. Brewery notes: "Double Simcoe IPA is for Hopheads seeking over the top flavor in a Double IPA, without the harshness. Brewed with Simcoe hops, developed and trademarked by Select Botanicals Group, LLC, in the year 2000. This hybrid hops was created to allow maximum aromatic oils, along with low cohumulone (harshness) levels, so that brewers can really load up a lot of them in a beer and not have any harshness. The piney, citrusy notes are all here, and in a very clean (non-harsh) way, as well as having an aroma with impact."

Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot Barleywine $16.89/6-pack 12 oz. bottles

Origin: Pennsylvania. Style: English Barleywine. Alcohol Content: 11.1%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B+. Brewery notes: "This barley wine is on the malty side, yet not overly sweet. Notes of date or perhaps fig on the palate follow a pleasurably malty aroma to your taste buds. The finish is warm and fruity. Enjoy Blithering Idiot in a brandy snifter or wine glass, preferably in front of the fire, or accompanying a literary classic. Lay a few down for 1-2 years, as aging only helps a barley wine develop more class."

Weyerbacher Old Heathen Imperial Stout $12.99/6-pack 12 oz. bottles

Origin: Pennsylvania. Style: Russian Imperial Stout. Alcohol Content: 8.0%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B+. Brewery notes: "Rich, velvety and deliciously complex, Old Heathen is a truly distinctive winter warmer. Seven types of malt and two varieties of hops are used to bring forth this big brew. Quite robust and roasty on the palate, Old Heathen imperial stout has a wonderfully fruity nose and a moderately dry finish. The taste is highly complex - perhaps you'll even discern notes of espresso or chocolate. Try it with rich stews, oysters, caviar or roasted meats. Old Heathen is also a perfect companion to chocolate desserts."

Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale $10.49/4-pack 12 oz. bottles

Origin: Pennsylvania. Style: Pumpkin Ale. Alcohol Content: 8.0%.
Beer Advocate Rating: B+. Brewery notes: "This seasonal, limited edition pumpkin ale is heartier, spicier, and more 'caramelly#39; and #39;pumpkin-y#39; than its faint brethren! This is a perfect finisher on a cool autumn night, or match it up with a slice of pumpkin pie and fresh whipped cream. If you don't agree this is the mother of all pumpkin ales, then you just don't like mothers!"

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout - click to enlarge

Origin: California.

Style: Russian Imperial Stout.

Alcohol Content: 9.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A.

Brewery notes: "Color: Black. Old Rasputin a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish. 75 IBU's." Beer Advocate Todd Alström notes: "Black as night, with a brown chunky head that seems to crawl, rather than stick, to the pint glass. A very impressive cascading effect when poured. Highly roasted malt aromas and alcoholic to the nose. Smooth, potent and espresso like with a high burnt malt and hop bitterness that finishes on the sweet side to say the least. Not a beer for the faint of heart, but rather barley wine lovers and chocolate fanatics."

Avery Brewing "The Reverend" Quadrupel Belgian Style Ale - click to enlarge

Origin: Colorado.

Style: Quadrupel (Quad).

Alcohol Content: 10.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

Brewery notes: "The Reverend is assertive, and pure of heart, a heart of candy sugar. It contains as many authentic imported Belgian specialty malts as the brewers could cram into our mash tun, and lots of Belgian dark candy sugar stirred into the brew kettle. A divinely complex and beautifully layered beer with hints of dark cherries, currants, and molasses, complimented by an underlying spiciness and a finish that is Sinfully smooth! Cellarable for 4 years."

Avery Brewing "Hog Heaven" Barleywine Style Ale $6.89/22 ounce bottle

Avery Brewing "Hog Heaven" Barleywine Style Ale - click to enlarge

Origin: Colorado.

Style: American Barleywine.

Alcohol Content: 9.2%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

Brewery notes: "This dangerously drinkable garnet beauty is a hop lover's delight. The intense dry-hop nose and the rich malt body are perfectly balanced for a caramel candy-like finish. This is a serious beer for serious beer afficianados and it only gets better with age. Cellarable for 3 years. 104 IBU's."

Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale - click to enlarge

Origin: California.

Style: American Strong Ale.

Alcohol Content: 7.2%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

Todd Alström, Beer Advocate review: "A dark brown beer with a creamy off-white head; good retention. Aroma was incredible with a complex floral, herbal, citrus and woody nose. At first taste: creamy and smooth in the mouthfeel. Then strong mint, followed by strong hoppy/pine-y herbal flavour and juicy citrus (grapefruit!!); big hop bite. Oak anchors the big malty sweet flavours and carries thru to the dry finish with strong notes of wood. The aging added a whole other depth of complexity and smoothness to the beer."

Stone Brewing Arrogant Bastard Ale - click to enlarge

Origin: California.

Style: American Strong Ale.

Alcohol Content: 7.2%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

First introduced in November, 1997, this is an aggressive beer. Hugely complex, deep reddish brown, frothy and stick, there's a lot going on between the hops and malt in this brew. Beer Advocate Todd Alström says, "Medium bodied, yet rich, full and complex. Smooth, especially as it warms. Big malty sweetness with caramel, chocolate and toasted/roasted flavours. Alcohol prickliness teases the palate then the brew kicks its ass with an assertive hop profile. It's raw, coarse, a bit prickly itself, mildly rind-like. Helps to balance the huge malt flavours. Finishes with a lingering sweetness, caramel, roasted coffee. A bit grain/dry too."

Maredsous 10 Triple - click to enlarge

Origin: Belgium.

Style: Tripel.

Alcohol Content: 10.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

Beer Advocate Jason Alström notes: "Hazed sunset orange color. Dry grainy and soft nutty yeast aroma. Dehydrated orange, pineapple and peach smell from the fruity nose. Obvious bitter flavors from the yeast, hops and grain. Clusters of flavors hit at once with a nutty yeast, dry veggie hop, husk astringent grain and a peppery alcohol. A bold but boisterous triple that is over the top in some aspects, astringencies bring this brew down. Other than that is it not a beer not to shy from. Put this one up against a hearty meal rather than drinking it alone."

Dale

Origin: Colorado.

Style: American IPA.

Alcohol Content: 6.5%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

From Oskar Blue's Cajun Grill & Brewery in Lyons, Colorado. Brewery notes: " Dale's Pale Ale is America's first hand-canned craft beer. It's an assertive but deftly balanced beer (somewhere between an American pale ale and an India Pale Ale) brewed with hefty amounts of European malts and American hops. It features a merengue-like head, a copper color, and a hoppy nose, thanks to a big post-boil addition of Centennial hops. To complement its hoppy first impression, Dale's also sports a rich middle of malts and hops, and a bracing finish. Dale's features 65 International Bittering Units." OMG! A great beer from a CAN!

Jason Alström (Beer Advocate co-founder) notes: "A top shelf brew, this one does it for me and then some. Pretty much sex in a bottle and the devil told me to drink it. Duvel is close to dry champagne but so much more. Between the bitterness and the sheer crispness, this beer is what I expect from the Belgian strong pale ale style." Also available in a 750 ml. bottle for $8.89.
